When first learning to draw and paint, many beginners choose watercolour paints, but why? Surely they are the most difficult paints to learn to use. in this video I ask why that is and compare them to acrylic paints, which I think are much easier to use. About This Video

When you’re first learning to draw and paint, a lot of people automatically reach for watercolours — and I completely understand why. They’re portable, they feel “artsy”, and they’re often what we’re given at school. But in this video I talk honestly about the bit nobody says out loud: watercolour can actually be one of the hardest mediums to get your head around as a beginner, because you’re working with transparency, timing, and the paper doing half the decision-making for you. So I compare watercolour with acrylics and ask the question: why do we push beginners toward the trickier option? I explain why I personally think acrylic paint is often much easier when you’re starting out — you can cover mistakes, build up layers, and you’re not fighting the white of the paper in the same way. The takeaway is that there isn’t a single “best” paint for everyone, but if you’re feeling frustrated with watercolour, it doesn’t mean you’re bad at art — it might just mean you’d enjoy acrylics more right now. And I’d genuinely love to know what you think after watching.
