Derwent Inktense blocks really lend themselves to this fun and colourful style. For beginners, this is a quick and easy way to achieve some lovely results. I used the Inktense blocks on a mixed media pad with a size 6 synthetic round brush. About This Video

In this video I’m showing you a really easy, beginner-friendly way to use Derwent Inktense Blocks to paint a bright, colourful landscape with a little nod to that Van Gogh-style energy. Inktense are brilliant if you like expressive mark making, because you can lay colour down quickly, reactivate it with water, and then keep building those layers up without everything turning to mud. I’m working on a mixed media pad and keeping my tools simple—just a size 6 synthetic round brush—so you can focus on the fun part: colour and movement. I talk you through how I apply the blocks, when I add water, and how I use layering to push contrast and get that lively, textured feel. Inktense really come into their own here because once they’re dry they’re more permanent, so you can glaze and deepen areas confidently. If you’ve been curious about Inktense but felt a bit unsure where to start, this is a quick win of a project that gives lovely results without needing loads of materials.
