About This Video

In this quick beginner-friendly lesson, I’m painting a simple watercolour sunset using a wet-in-wet technique, and I’m keeping it really approachable. I’m working on Saunders 300lb watercolour paper because it can take a lot of water without buckling, which makes the whole process feel calmer (especially if you’re new to watercolour). I’m using Sennelier paints to build that soft, glowing sky, letting the pigments do their own beautiful thing while the paper stays wet. One of my favourite little tricks in this video is using a coin to create the sun. It’s such an easy way to keep a clean, bright circle while you wash colour around it, and it instantly gives you that sunset focal point. Once the sky is dry enough, I finish it off with a dark silhouette in the foreground to push the contrast and make the sky feel even more luminous. If you’ve been wanting to paint sunsets but didn’t know where to start, this is a lovely first one to try—simple steps, strong results, and plenty of room to make it your own.
