I decided to draw it in ink and watercolour and emphasise the bright flowers. The drawing process is very therapeutic, whilst you are absorbed in drawing you forget about other things that may be worrying you. About This Video

In this video I take you with me along the canal towpath where I spotted a canal boat absolutely smothered in flowering plants. I use a free reference photo (linked) and talk you through how I approach the drawing in ink first, then build it up with watercolour—keeping the boat structure clear but really leaning into the bright, joyful flowers as the star of the piece. I also chat about why I find drawing so therapeutic. When I’m properly absorbed in the line work and then the gentle layering of watercolour, my mind stops circling around whatever else is going on and just settles into the process. If you’re a beginner, this is a lovely subject to practise simplifying shapes, choosing where to put detail, and letting colour do some of the heavy lifting. By the end you’ll have a finished ink-and-watercolour piece, plus a handful of techniques you can reuse for boats, buildings, and any scene with lots of organic texture like plants and blooms.
