About This Video

In this autumn apples tutorial I’m painting step-by-step with Derwent Inktense Blocks on watercolour paper, and I’m keeping it very beginner-friendly. The big thing I focus on is working in layers and letting each colour dry completely before I add the next one. That drying time is what helps me keep the colours clean and stops everything turning into a muddy brown (especially with reds and greens). I build the apples up gradually: first getting the main shapes in, then deepening the shadows, and finally adding those richer autumn tones that make the fruit feel rounded and glossy. Inktense behaves differently to traditional watercolour, so I’m treating it with a bit more intention—putting colour down, activating it, and then leaving it alone to set before I glaze over the top. If you’re curious about how Inktense compares to watercolour, I’ve also linked my comparison video so you can see the differences more clearly.
