About This Video

In this video I’m talking about something we’ve all done at least once: messing up a keyboard purchase and then realizing you “shut the bed” after the fact. If you’re buying your first mechanical keyboard (or you’re newer to the hobby and grabbing another one), I walk through 5 super common mistakes I see people make—and how to avoid them so you actually end up with a board you’re confident in. First, I’m big on not guessing your way through switches. Test them if you can (switch testers are cheap), or at least do the research—linear vs tactile vs clicky is a real “you don’t know until you try” situation. I also hit the misconception that you *need* a “gaming keyboard” to game, because faster actuation sounds cool in marketing but for most of us it doesn’t move the needle. Then I get into building: it’s not some mystical electronics project anymore—hot-swap kits make it ridiculously approachable. Finally, I talk budget and planning ahead. Don’t skimp if you don’t have to (same energy as tattoos and plastic surgeons), but also know there are diminishing returns. And please, plan for future upgrades—USB-C, hot-swap, MX keycap compatibility, and layouts can save you from getting bitten later.
