About This Video

In this video I’m finally back after a long hiatus (we welcomed baby number four), and I’m jumping straight into Razer’s new “keyboard upgrades” to see what’s actually worth your money. Razer sent over a big box of goodies: Phantom “pudding-style” keycaps, their existing PBT keycap sets now bundled with a matching coiled cable, and three new sizes of ergonomic wrist rests. I break down pricing, what’s actually new, and who these accessories are really for. The Phantom keycaps look cool on paper—stealth legends that basically disappear when the board is off, then light up when RGB is on—but I ran into a QC issue immediately. The caps appear to be two-piece and a few tops popped off out of the box, which I don’t love at $35, especially when cheaper pudding sets like HyperX or G.Skill give you more dramatic RGB for $20. On the other hand, the PBT + coiled cable bundles are a better value play: the keycaps are the same as before, but adding a matching cable makes it a solid “dip your toes into customization” option for gaming keyboard owners. The wrist rests are lightweight and not magnetic, but for $20 they’re comfy and wide enough to fit most hands.
