In this video I’m checking out the hype behind Milwaukee’s new M12 FUEL subcompact impacts—the 1/4" (3048) and the 3/8" (3049). The whole point is simple: they’re super, super small, so you can actually get into tight places without stacking extensions and adapters. I unbox them, throw batteries in (yes, I tried the XC 5.0 because why not), run through the mode setup, and compare them side-by-side with the stuff I actually use—my Gen 1 stubby, Gen 2 stubby, M18 mid torque, and the big high torque beast. Then I take the 3/8" out to Pick-n-Pull and put it to work on real junkyard fasteners while I’m grabbing parts for my E36. I mess with the modes (neutral + double-tap to change), and you’ll see pretty quick why I usually just live in mode 3 and control it with the trigger. My takeaway: the 3/8" subcompact is the go-to and it’s going to get used a lot. The 1/4" is cool for super tight, finite stuff (think 15mm and under), but for most people you can probably skip it—unless you’ve got a specific use case like tight header work with swivels.
