In this video, I’m at Le Sommet de la Brique 2025 talking with Louis Bédard from the Quebec LEGO User Group about one of the most action-packed layouts on the show floor: a LEGO air base inspired by Exercise Maple Flag. Louis built a full slice of base life—main hangar, radar, control tower, and fire station—pulling inspiration from real-world references like Nellis Air Force Base, an old RAF airfield in the UK, and Cold Lake in Alberta. The result feels like a living scene, not just a lineup of aircraft. What really makes this display pop is the movement and lighting. Louis uses a system called Gold Brick (Duplo-style but LEGO-compatible) to animate planes and vehicles, and he even elevates much of the layout on 2-inch styrofoam to make the mechanism work and save bricks. We walk through a huge roster of aircraft and factions—from a Maverick F-14 and an F-4 Phantom with custom camouflage stickers, to Canadian CF-18s, a CH-146 Griffin, and an E-3 AWACS with Canadian crew context. He also breaks down the real time investment: 10 hours to set up, years to build, and dozens of hours per aircraft—plus even more for decals and sticker design.
