About This Video

People love to give the advice: “Talk to the camera like you’re on FaceTime with a friend.” I get what they mean (I’ve said it too)—it’s supposed to make you sound natural, like you’re not performing. But in this video I sit with the part people don’t always talk about: what if you don’t have anyone to FaceTime in the first place? Loneliness is more common than we admit. You can be surrounded by people—coworkers, classmates, acquaintances—and still not have someone you can just call and really talk to. That’s where the camera (and journaling) starts to feel different to me. Sometimes you just need somewhere for your thoughts to go, because they get heavy when they stay in your head too long. Writing them down changes something. Saying them out loud changes something. And even though it might look strange—someone alone in a room talking to a camera—it doesn’t feel strange because deep down you know someone might hear it one day. Maybe months later, maybe years later, someone presses play and realizes you’ve been thinking the same exact thing. That’s when it stops being a monologue and becomes a connection. Maybe that’s the point: connection doesn’t always happen in real time, but it can still be real.
