Salutations, friends. In this video I’m sitting down to respond to a few really thoughtful comments and keep some ongoing fragrance conversations going. I also give my usual disclaimer: I’m a consumer and a collector (not formally trained in perfumery), and I film on my iPad in a way that helps me avoid triggering my chronic migraines—so if it looks like I’m not “looking at you,” that’s very much on purpose. We talk a lot about managing fragrance as a hobby when you deal with chronic illness, especially migraines and nausea. I share what’s helped me most: learning your personal triggers, sampling instead of blind buying, and being mindful about overspraying. For me, “blue” aquatics can be a total migraine nightmare, while oud (even the funky barnyardy kind) weirdly doesn’t trigger me at all. I also mention the nausea bracelet I use (a little TENS-unit style device) that’s been a lifesaver for motion sickness and day-to-day nausea. Then we get into fragrance marketing and gender—what “old Hollywood glamour” means to me, why I describe scents as leaning masculine/feminine, and how that’s more about style and context than “who’s allowed to wear what.” And yes: we address the big one—why some people think Baccarat Rouge 540 (and Cloud) smell like a dental office. I love BR540 on my skin, but I absolutely understand that sharp, sugary, medicinal association for other people—especially at that price point.
