In this episode of YOU Be the Behavior Consultant, I dig into a concept that really jumped out at me: “sophisticated harm.” In animal training, this isn’t usually about bad intentions. It’s the slow, normalized harm that can happen when our information systems quietly omit useful ideas—so teams keep repeating the same familiar methods, even when better options exist. I walk through a hypothetical example with an injection behavior where everyone keeps recommending systematic desensitization and counterconditioning, while a less-platformed trainer offers a different lens: distance as a reinforcer. When that kind of information doesn’t make it into the dominant pipeline, the animal pays the price through missed welfare opportunities. I also break down common biases that shape what we “know,” including opportunity bias, confirmation bias, funding/sponsorship bias, and what I call the brilliance bias—overvaluing confidence, charisma, and credentials over demonstrated outcomes. Visibility doesn’t equal accuracy, familiarity doesn’t equal excellence, and repetition doesn’t equal evidence. My goal is to help you audit your own information diet, notice when authority and social proof are overriding critical thinking, and treat critical thinking as a professional competency—because animals don’t experience our intentions; they experience our outcomes.
