What if “calm” could open more doors in your training than you ever realized? In this video, we explore calm as a functional, trainable outcome rather than something we vaguely describe or assume. Instead of treating calm as a fixed state, we view it as a label for a group of behaviors—ones that can and should be shaped over time with clear criteria and intention. We dive into how these behaviors may look very different across taxa, and why understanding species-typical and individual variation is essential for defining what “calm” actually means in your setting. From there, we connect calm to the contingencies that maintain it—whether through positive or negative reinforcement—and explain why aligning with what the animal truly values is key to building stable, reliable responses. You’ll also see how genuine choice plays a critical role in validating the behavior: helping us ensure calm is not the result of pressure or suppression, but something the animal is actively participating in. Finally, we discuss why the way behavior is acquired and maintained matters—not just for training success but also for emotional well-being. The procedures we choose shape not only behavior but also the animal's overall experience. This episode offers a practical, compassionate framework for building calm as a meaningful foundation that supports everything that follows in your training program. If calm is the foundation for everything from husbandry to complex behaviors, this episode offers practical, compassionate strategies to help you build it in a way that is both effective and meaningful. About This Video

In this episode of YOU be the Behavior Consultant, I dig into a word we all use constantly—“calm”—and I challenge us to stop treating it like a vague vibe or a simple body language snapshot. Calm is a label for a group of behaviors, and if we want it to function as a true foundation behavior, we have to operationalize it with clear criteria and context. Topography alone can be deceptive: stillness can be fear (think of a rabbit freezing), flooding, or shutdown. So I walk through how to look beyond what it “looks like” and instead analyze the contingencies that are maintaining what we’re seeing. I share practical examples across taxa, including a prehensile-tailed porcupine medication routine, two giraffes learning blood draw skills with very different comfort levels around touch, and a turkey vulture session where I questioned whether we accidentally made targeting coercive because there wasn’t a genuine alternative available. That leads to one of my biggest takeaways: genuine choice is a diagnostic tool. When animals have real options, their behavior gives us cleaner information, and we can adjust our training strategy to address competing contingencies—often by making the aversive part smaller, slower, or more predictable, and by aligning our reinforcement with what the animal truly values (including distance when escape/avoidance is the outcome they’re seeking).
