In this livestream, I take a behavior-analytic look at why professional conversations—especially online—can feel more combative than collaborative lately. I break down what I call the “digital amphitheater effect,” where discussions turn into spectator sports and the reinforcer shifts away from truth-seeking and toward immediate reactions, likes, and outrage. I also talk about how mismatched audiences (advanced topics landing in general feeds) can create misinterpretation, and how “performative kindness” can mask gatekeeping and fuel distrust. I also explore scarcity mindsets in our animal-training niche—this idea that if one person shines, someone else loses their light—and how that can drive tribalism, polarization, and even extinction-burst-style pushback when new information challenges identity. I discuss spotlight hijacking, citation failures, nitpicking minor details to diminish major welfare gains, and how “merchants of doubt” tactics can be used to stall progress without data. Most importantly, I offer practical ways to question information without tearing people down: ask about variables, request clarification, stick to facts, and practice confident humility. When we communicate like scientists—willing to rethink our opinions when the data changes—we protect innovation, strengthen our professional culture, and keep the main point where it belongs: improving animal welfare.
