In this episode of YOU be the Behavior Consultant, I dig into what I’m calling the “opportunity divide”—the reality that not all information gets the same chance to influence our animal training industry. After nearly 30 years of attending conferences, and also serving on boards and committees, I’ve seen this from both sides: as someone in the audience and as someone helping decide what gets featured. I walk through what trade organizations are designed to do (networking, standards, education, advocacy), and why that influence matters so much when it comes to welfare, best practices, and what becomes “common knowledge.” I also unpack how bias can creep in—especially through sponsorship and funding, opaque decision-making, narrow topic selection, and a lack of conflict-of-interest policies. I talk about why diversity in speakers, authors, and leadership can strengthen an organization, while also acknowledging the practical challenge: competent volunteers can be hard to find, and sometimes repeat leaders are repeat leaders because they’re genuinely effective. My takeaway is simple: we need transparency, clear criteria, conflict-of-interest safeguards, and active mentoring of emerging voices—plus strong critical thinking skills from all of us when we consume conference and trade-organization information.
