In this live stream, I dig into what “hopelessness” really is through a behavior-analytic lens, because I think it’s easy to treat it like a personal flaw or a fixed trait. Instead, I frame it as information about contingencies: conditions where no available behavior is reliably producing a desired outcome. When that happens, disengagement, freezing, “giving up,” or refusal to participate can be the most functional option—whether we’re talking about people on a team or animals in a training program. I walk through common processes that create these conditions, like punishment, extinction, coerced participation, competing contingencies (including superimposition—layering reinforcement over an underlying aversive), and environments that don’t support an individual’s repertoire. I use zoo and wildlife examples—like shifting, injection training, and social learning—alongside human parallels (innovation being punished, being blocked from contributing, or being trapped in a single pathway). The practical takeaway is that rebuilding hope isn’t about pep talks or “just add more reinforcement.” It’s about changing starting conditions so success is likely: increase degrees of freedom (more ways to win), start where reinforcement will actually contact, collect meaningful data, and let observable progress rebuild momentum.
