You’ve heard the buzzwords—now meet the people who paid the price to make real progress possible. In this video, we honor the often-overlooked pioneers who advanced the use of negative reinforcement within a constructional approach framework to address fear and aggressive behavior—from wild-caught hoofstock to big cats and beyond. Their journey wasn’t easy. Through professional exclusion, public criticism, and persistent pushback, these scientist-practitioners refined humane, effective procedures that have transformed animal training across zoos, aquariums, companion animals, and beyond. Discover how reshaping behavior through access to distance has helped resolve complex cases and improve animal well-being across species. Learn why acknowledging this history matters for science, practice, and the animals in your care. ----------- RECOMMENDED CITATION Barbara Heidenreich. (2025, April 7). About This Video

In this live stream of You Be the Behavior Consultant, I celebrate the often-unsung pioneers who advanced a constructional approach to fear and aggression that are maintained by negative reinforcement—especially the modern use of distance (access to moving away) as a reinforcer. I talk about why this matters: many of us, myself included, were taught “positive reinforcement only,” and that overemphasis created a blind spot. We ended up superimposing food-based procedures over negative reinforcement contingencies, leaning on tools like desensitization, counterconditioning, extinction, and DRA/DRI—sometimes with frustration, persistent fear/aggression, delayed intervention, and compromised welfare. I walk through the scientific roots (Goldiamond, Joe Lang, Paul Andronis), the empirical animal studies that helped form the “trunk” of the work (including the ORCA community under Dr. Jesús Rosales-Ruiz), and the refinements and dissemination from people like Kellie Snider, Mary Hunter, Sean Will, Matanoshi Muta, Hillary Hankey, Anetta Peterson, Jim Mackey, and others. I also share my own turning point—my 2018 conversation with Jesús—and how my application improved over hundreds of cases across zoo contexts. A major takeaway is that this is not about “adding aversives.” It’s about analyzing what consequence is maintaining behavior, shaping new responses with genuine choice and degrees of freedom, and acknowledging the people who took real professional risks to move welfare forward.
