About This Video

Hey everybody, Mike here with BackpackingTV—and for once, I’ve actually got some good news to share. In this video I’m talking about public land sales, and how that whole idea just got yanked off the menu. What makes this one wild is that it’s a rare moment where people across the board basically shook hands, agreed “nope,” and made sure selling public lands didn’t happen—at least in this bill as it works its way through. I’ve said it before: even if the parcels being discussed aren’t Yellowstone, it’s still a bad precedent. We hike on these lands, we hunt on them, we fish on them—public land is one of those things that basically everybody values, no matter what “side” you’re on. And when the pitch is “don’t worry, it’s just unused or undermanaged land,” I’m like… that’s exactly the stuff I want to keep. The pristine, less-touched places are where you can really disappear into the middle of nowhere and do what you love. The takeaway is simple: the pressure worked. People wrote angry letters, governors heard from us, and the public land sale language was removed. It’s a big fat win—and proof that when we kick and scream long enough, sometimes we actually get what we want.
