About This Video

I made this one for people who are brand new to hiking—like, truly brand new. I’m not here to throw a rigid “never leave home without this” checklist at you, because hiking is situational. What you need in the Appalachians can be totally different than what you need in Southern California, and I’ve seen that firsthand after moving from East Tennessee to the LA area. Out west especially, I ran into a lot of folks who were wildly unprepared—asking strangers for water, getting injured, getting lost—the whole thing. My best advice is simple: before you head out, ask yourself, “What weird thing could happen today?” That one question will dictate your packing strategy better than any generic list. Maybe you get turned around and end up out longer than planned—suddenly a flashlight, extra water, and extra food matter. Maybe the sun feels fine in your shaded neighborhood, then you’re getting cooked for hours—now a big hat or lightweight hoodie makes sense. Creek crossings, cold weather, and dumb decisions (I’m guilty) are exactly why I like extra socks, basic first aid, and even a small water filter—sometimes for you, sometimes for the random person you run into who needs help.
