When most people think about North Dakota, they think “flyover country.” I used to be one of them. But after spending time here biking, hiking, and backpacking across its vast landscapes, I can confidently tell you that couldn’t be further from the truth. North Dakota is a place of stories. Stories written into the badlands, carved by rivers, and carried forward by the people who call this place home. On this trip, I set out to experience it all, from hiking trails in Bismarck, to the rugged, legendary Maah Daah Hey Trail. Somewhere along the way, I realized this isn’t just a destination, it’s an experience that stays with you. Special thanks to North Dakota Tourism for sponsoring this episode of Trackin' Dirt! About This Video

When most people think of North Dakota, they think “flyover country.” I used to be one of them. In this trip, I set out to see how the people and the land shape each other—starting in Bismarck and diving into the stories that are layered across this state. I was honored to attend the United Tribes International Powwow, then spent time at the North Dakota Heritage Center and State Museum learning how those stories connect to the Maah Daah Hey, the Little Missouri River (Chansotkawakpa—“the towering tree river”), and the deeper history that runs through this landscape. From there, I warmed up on the trails at Fort Abraham Lincoln—where you can ride modern singletrack and roll past old cavalry fortifications just minutes from downtown—before heading west to Medora. I leaned into the Old West vibe (yes, I bought a cowboy hat), visited “my favorite president” Teddy Roosevelt, and spent a day at Bar X Ranch getting a taste of what it means to work this land with your hands. Then it was time for the main event: the Maah Daah Hey Trail. I got my first real taste of bikepacking on this 144-mile point-to-point route—punchy climbs, fast descents, big exposure, and very little shade. After a hot day, that Little Missouri River crossing felt incredible, and the backpacking night out in the badlands reminded me why this place stays with you long after you leave.
