About This Video

In this video I’m dialing it way back and talking directly to the folks who’ve never backpacked before—but have always wanted to. I hear it all the time: sporty, outdoorsy people who feel stuck because of gear questions, not knowing where to go, or just getting overwhelmed by “you NEED this” internet advice. So I walk through five simple tips that’ll keep you safe, comfortable, and actually having fun on your first overnight. First, I tackle analysis paralysis and point you to a beginner essentials checklist I personally use every single trip because people forget stuff (especially me). Then I show you how I pack a backpack for comfort: bulky sleep stuff low, heavy items centered and tight to your back, and quick-access snacks/headlamp up top. From there we talk about choosing an easy, familiar destination (think five miles tops), going with a buddy, and leaving early so you’re not setting up your tent in the dark. And yes—this will make the ultralight crowd mad—I recommend overpacking on your first trip. Bring extra water, food, and a little “fun stuff,” because this isn’t Survivor Man. The goal is to learn the basics, stay safe, and come home excited for trip number two.
