Are expensive backpacks really worth it? In this video, I take a look at my experience with newer, fancier kit and compare it with some of the stuff I used to carry around to determine if expensive packs are a must — or if your old backpack is still good enough. About This Video

For the past year I’ve been hosting Epic Trails and suddenly I’ve had access to a lot of newer, fancier kit—stuff I honestly couldn’t afford for most of my life. So in this video I finally do the comparison I’ve wanted to do for a long time: cheap backpacks vs expensive backpacks, and whether dropping something like $400+ actually matters out on the trail. My big takeaway is that spec sheets don’t tell the whole story. You can talk “mega fibers” and storage numbers all day, but what really matters is how it feels after a few hours of hiking. In my experience, the more expensive the pack is, the more “invisible” it becomes—meaning you notice it less, it rides better, and you can focus on your trip instead of hot spots, sweaty back, and pressure on your hips. I talk through my own progression from a super-cheap Teeu pack (you could really feel it) to a pack I still love like the Kelty Outskirt 70, then into higher-end options like the Mystery Ranch Radix 47. And I really want to dispel this idea that you have to upgrade to be a “real” hiker. This isn’t a video game. Nice packs exist as options, not as a tier system—and whether you upgrade is totally your call.
