Hey everybody, Mike here with BackpackingTV. In this video I’m talking through the provincewide woods restrictions in Nova Scotia (and similar bans in places like Newfoundland and New Brunswick) where outdoor activity in the forest is basically shut down—camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, and obviously fires. I also clear up a big misconception: this isn’t the first time it’s happened (it’s occurred in 2001, 2016, and 2023), but it’s still a huge deal—especially because the fines can be up to $25,000 CAD if you’re in violation. I dig into what the ban actually means on crown land versus private land, and why the vague “use your best judgment” language makes people nervous when the penalty is that massive. I also try to look at it from different perspectives—folks in populated areas who might support it, versus people who live surrounded by forest and could accidentally break the rules chasing a dog or grabbing a ball. And then there’s the bigger question: if wildfire seasons keep getting worse, do we start seeing more blanket bans like this elsewhere, and what does that do to the outdoor industry, trail orgs, guides, and all of us who rely on access to public land?
