I was thinking back to a conversation with my mom and one of our friends—a single mom—who moved from the United States to East Africa almost five years ago. They were talking about how safe they feel here, and they weren’t even trying to make a big statement about safety back in the U.S. It just hit me how much we’re conditioned to believe that everything outside of America is “scary,” uncivilized, chaotic, or unsafe—especially if you’re talking about Africa or moving to another continent. And then I looked around at our own neighborhood in Zanzibar. We’ve got a lot of single women here—single Black women too—who are genuinely living their best lives: making new friends, starting businesses, dating, going on excursions, learning languages, and building community. I’m not saying it’s perfect, but it’s peaceful, and it’s possible if you know where to look and how to plan.
