In this video, I’m talking “safety first” and how I keep my family’s security at the top of the list while living abroad. We’ve been outside the United States for four going on five years, and what I’ve learned is this: there’s no one magic app or single move that guarantees safety. It’s more like slices to a pizza pie—you stack simple, practical layers that keep you informed, connected, and able to make better decisions fast. I break down tools like the U.S. Embassy STEP program (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program) and what it actually does (email alerts) and what it does not do (it’s not an evacuation plan). I also talk about quick “I’m okay” communication like Facebook’s “Mark Yourself Safe,” plus why joining country-specific groups (Facebook, WhatsApp, Expat app/XPT, Threads) is one of the most underrated safety and research moves you can make. Outside the U.S., WhatsApp is just how people communicate—free calling, groups, and a virtual neighborhood effect where people can check on you. Then we get into the human side: make at least two physical friends in-country, and at least one local friend who understands the nuances—areas to avoid, where to shop, banking, hospitals, and what’s really happening on the ground. Finally, I touch on doing your research (corruption indexes, natural disasters) so you’re not spending more time planning a two-week vacation than planning a whole new life.
