Moving abroad wasn’t easy for me and my family, but it was possible—and for us, it’s been peaceful. In this video I’m standing by the Indian Ocean talking about something people don’t hear enough: the United States is not the only place where you can feel safe. Plenty of people feel safe in the US, sure, but you can absolutely feel safe abroad too. My youngest, my brother, and our retired parents all moved abroad almost five years ago, and it’s been a blessing because we’re not walking around worried about violence all the time. I also speak directly to the myths—this idea that everything outside the US is “chaos and destruction.” That’s not reality if you use common sense and choose the right place for you. I’ve met plenty of people (including single Black women) who’ve moved abroad, started fresh, built businesses, dated, learned languages, expanded their networks, and enjoyed dinners, nightlife, and walks on the beach at night—safe, without a care in the world. My takeaway is simple: go where you feel safest, most welcome, and most powerful—whether that’s Africa, Thailand, Mexico, the Caribbean, or somewhere else you’ve always wanted to go.
