In this review I put Van Dieman’s Harvest Series Wasabi through my usual “nerd with a camera and an opinion” ink gauntlet so you can see what you’re getting before you buy. Wasabi is a green ink, and I run it across a bunch of different papers and notebooks so you can see how it behaves in real writing, not just a pretty swab. I start with my general thoughts, then I move through writing samples on everything from Maruman Mnemosyne and Clairfontaine to Portage Reporter, National Steno, Mead Composition, and even plain 20lb Hammermill copy paper. I also do two chromatographies—one the normal way and one after the ink has dried for 10 minutes—because I want to see what’s really in there and how it separates once it’s had time to set. After that I do my resistance testing on Rhodia: I let it dry for three days, then I hit it with highlighting, water, pen flush, and a 1/3 bleach solution to see what survives. I wrap up with my nib/pen and paper recommendations for Wasabi, plus I call out a color-complement ink (and I link Kaweco Pearl Black as a great pairing if you want a clean contrast).
