About This Video

In this video I’m sharing pen recommendations that work really well with a Hobonichi—especially if you’re using Tomoe River paper. I also did swatches, so make sure you check the end for a close-up (and feel free to screenshot it). I start with the basics: ballpoint pens. I personally just love a multicolored pen, so I recommend the Uni Jetstream (and if you have one, a Pilot Acro is also a great option). Ballpoints are generally super easy to use, and on Tomoe River paper they don’t ghost that much on the opposite side. Next up are gel pens, and you really can’t go wrong here. My personal favorites are the Zebra Sarasa Vintage line because the colors are nice and muted, but Sarasa also comes in a lot of other colors. I also recommend the Pilot Juice Up line, the Pentel EnerGel (my personal favorite—especially the 0.3 because it’s really, really thin), and the Uni-ball One series. And of course, fountain pens: I’m team fountain pens. The best part about using fountain pens and inks in a Hobonichi is that the paper shows ink properties beautifully, which is exactly why so many fountain pen users love Tomoe River paper. I also quickly cover fineliners for doodling, drawing, and headlines (with archival ink), plus Zebra Mildliners for soft, not-too-neon highlighting.
