There are a lot of mods you can do on an E90 with the N54, but after a tune, a front mount intercooler is one of those “yeah, this actually matters” upgrades. In this video I install a VRSF FMIC and show you why the stock intercooler just isn’t that great at keeping intake air temps under control. Colder IAT means you can cram more air into the cylinders, the computer can add more fuel, and you can make more power—plus the big thing is it stays consistent instead of heat soaking. I walk through the install step-by-step: jacking the car up safely, pulling the splash panel, dealing with the factory quick-connect style fittings, and swapping to the silicone couplers and clamps that come with the kit. I also talk about real-world annoyances—like California smog/CARB stuff—and I show you clamp orientation tips so you don’t end up with a bolt trying to chew through a coolant hose. The hardest part for me ended up being the fan shroud/transmission oil cooler packaging on the automatic cars, and I tell you what I did to make it all fit correctly. At the end, I compare logs before and after. Stock IAT climbed from about 77 up to 116°F on back-to-back pulls, but with the new intercooler it stayed down around 59–68°F. That’s the difference: way less heat soak, way more capacity.
