About This Video

I’ve been driving my E90 around town and started hearing a louder-than-normal clunk over bumps. So I jacked it up, got under there with a pry bar, and found what I suspected: the front lower control arm bushings were worn. They weren’t completely destroyed, but there was way too much movement in the bigger front suspension member, and that’s the kind of slop that’ll make noise. In this video I show you how I check them, what “good” movement looks like, and how to confirm which bushing is actually causing the clunk. Then I walk through swapping both front control arm members as a kit (about a $300 kit), because if one bushing is going, the rest are the same age and not far behind. Tool-wise it’s pretty simple: 18mm and 21mm, a breaker bar, and optionally a torque wrench. I also show you a couple real-world tricks—like using a floor jack to put tension on a spinning ball joint, and why you absolutely don’t tighten the bushing bolt until the suspension is at normal ride height. Torque specs are in there too (129 ft-lbs on the ball joint nut, and 50 ft-lbs plus 90 degrees on the inner bolt depending on bolt grade), but honestly: make it hella tight and you’ll be more than fine.
