About This Video

In this video I’m changing the shocks and struts on my 2007 BMW E90 335i, and I’m doing it because I’m getting those classic weird noises backing up while turning, plus a little clunk when I brake, stop, or change directions. A lot of times it’s that upper strut mount/bearing getting worn out, so I walk through pulling the front strut out of the knuckle, dealing with the pinch bolt, spreading the clamp with a big chisel, and getting enough droop by popping the tie rod end and loosening the lower control arm bushing bolts (so you don’t tear up the rubber by overextending it). I also show how I assemble the front strut with spring compressors—and I’m very blunt about it: this part is dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. I explain how I position the compressors when you don’t have enough coils to grab, where I clamp with vice grips (above where the bump stop sits, not on the seal area), and how to align the spring end and the mount nubs so everything clocks correctly. On the rear shocks, the “hard” part is really the trunk trim so you can reach the top nut. I show removing the mount (E12), swapping in new mounts, and the little gotchas—like installing the top piece upside down and then wondering why it won’t thread. I also show the right way to re-tighten bushing bolts: jack the suspension until the car’s weight is on it, then tighten, so you don’t preload and kill the bushings early.
