About This Video

In this video I put my favorite voiceover mic—the Shure SM7B—up against a crazy cheap full bundle: the Fifine K688CT. The SM7B has been the go-to for podcasts, streaming, and studio voice work forever, and I’ll be honest… for video voiceover it just sounds “done” way faster with less editing. But not everybody has $400 for just the mic, then another couple hundred for stands, cables, and the rest of the setup. The K688CT is around $100 and comes with the mic, boom arm, and cable—literally everything you need to start. I tested the K688CT and the SM7B through my best-case chain (NEVE 1073 + Distressor) and ran it straight into my Sony FX3 so you can hear the real difference. Build quality is exactly what you’d expect: the SM7B is heavy and sturdy, the K688CT is lightweight and the arm feels cheap. Sound-wise, the K688CT comes off more mid-forward and a little hotter in volume, while the SM7B has that warm low bottom end I just don’t hear in most mics. I also plug in the Fifine Tank 3 so you can hear another budget option. If you’re building a perfect pro studio, SM7B is still the move—but if you’re on a budget, the K688CT package is hard to beat.
