In this video I put UAD’s brand-new drops to the test and I’m not just reading the marketing page—I’m checking if the price is even justified in a real mix/master workflow. I compared the Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor Class A (the newer “red” vibe) and the Maag EQ4 MS against cheaper options and even free plugins, because the real question is: do you need this, or are your current plugins already good enough? On the Shadow Hills side, I talk about the whole “two compressors in one” thing (optical for smooth, VCA for punch), the switchable transformers (nickel/iron/steel), plus the extra features like parallel mix, headroom, and width options. I A/B the OG version vs the new Class A and you can hear the Class A comes off more punchy and a little louder, while still staying clean. Then I run it against a free compressor and show you can get close enough for a lot of people. On the Maag EQ4 MS, I focus on the Air Band and the mid/side flexibility. To me, that high-end sparkle is where it separates from a basic free EQ—especially when you’re trying to push those highs without it falling apart. My takeaway: beginners don’t need to go broke, but if you’re mastering and chasing that pro-level polish, the Maag EQ is worth a serious look.
