In this video I’m reviewing a bunch of watercolor palettes I’ve used and worked with over the years, and I’m looking at them the way I actually paint—how they hold paint, how they mix, and how practical they are when you’re trying to get a clean wash fast. I’m not here to be fancy about it. I want a palette that lets me see my color, grab it quickly, and get back to the paper without fighting puddles, staining, or cramped mixing space. I also talk about the bigger idea behind palettes: your palette won’t magically fix your painting, but the right setup absolutely makes it easier to stay consistent. If you struggle with muddy mixes, it’s often not “you,” it’s the way your colors are arranged, how much room you have to mix, and whether you’re constantly contaminating wells. My takeaway is simple—pick a palette that matches how you paint (studio vs travel, big mixes vs tiny mixes), keep it clean enough to trust your mixes, and don’t overthink it. Confidence comes from repetition and a setup that doesn’t slow you down.
