In this video I paint a Brisbane, Australia restaurant scene in watercolor, and the whole goal is ambiance and mood—not “perfect detail.” I treat it like a little travel sketch: get the big shapes in place, lock in the value pattern, and then let the paint do what watercolor does best. The restaurant lights, the darker street shapes, and the soft transitions are what sell the feeling, so I focus on those instead of over-drawing every window and sign. I keep the process practical and fast: simplify the architecture into readable blocks, save a few key lights, and then build the atmosphere with confident washes. I’m always watching edges—where I want things to melt and where I want a crisp line to pull the eye. If you’re trying to make your city scenes look “alive,” this is a great exercise in painting the mood first, then dropping in just enough detail to make it believable.
