Drawing the Face on a Figure with Charcoal (part 1)

In a previous figure drawing demo, I lost a good bit in the middle where I was drawing the face. I got a request to do a demo showing how I draw the face because of this. So this is my response. It's another female figure, but this video only deals with the face. I start out with the figure already roughed in and finish most of it off camera. Part 2 is up and you can see it here: https://youtu.be/luB2k0jZy9g If you are interested in my techniques and approach for drawing the entire figure, you can check out those videos here: Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEugnI08uPA Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2zV98m1Rtw My apologies on the first half: after I started, I realized that because of my camera angle, my hand was blocking much of my drawing as I drew, so I changed it for a better view about halfway through. Again, this is a long video, so if you don't want to watch the entire thing, here are the important topics: 1:07 - not a portrait 2:33 - facial proportions 3:57 - using horizontal lines to suggest features 8:38 - drawing curves with straight lines 8:59 - planes of the face 11:57 - how to approach the nose 13:00 - the lips 15:21 - starting on the hair 19:39 - Don't mix charcoal and white! 20:25 - using the eraser to draw subtractively 21:21 - drawing the eyes 24:04 - cast shadows on the face 25:20 - fine-tuning the mouth 26:14 - hard and soft shadows on the face 28:07 - still no small details 28:56 - using the blending stick 33:55 - erasing with the chamois 34:22 - working on the neck 35:30 - fixing the mouth 36:11 - finally some detail 39:25 - structure around the eyes 41:45 - reflected light on the jawline 42:49 - improving on reality 44:43 - fixing the nose 45:57 - adding white 47:25 - lip highlights 51:14 - some final touches 52:10 - lightening the shadows 53:40 - No eyelashes! 54:25 - refining the jawline 55:44 - aligning the corners of the mouth 1:00:50 - subtle details
