About This Video

What’s up guys—over here, I did an easy DIY automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and filter/strainer change that you can do at home. In this video I worked on a Hilux, but the steps are pretty much the same for the Fortuner, Innova, Prado, LC300 (GCC), and even Isuzu D-Max and Mu-X that use the 6-speed automatic (AC60). I show you the exact parts you’ll need (ATF WS for Toyota, pan gasket, strainer/filter, O-ring, plus the optional plug gaskets), the tools, and the little “top tips” like putting bolts back where you removed them so you don’t lose anything. I walk you through removing the skid plate/under cover, taking off the crossmember for more room, and the important step: make sure the filler plug can be opened before you drain anything. After draining, I drop the pan, remove the strainer (3 bolts), clean the pan and magnets with brake cleaner, then reinstall everything using proper torque and a star pattern so it seals properly. I also measure the drained ATF (mine was around 3.5L), then I refill a bit extra (4–5L) so we can set the level correctly. The key takeaway is setting the ATF level at the right temperature range (40–50°C). I show the scanner method, and also the diagnostic mode procedure if you don’t have a scanner—then you crack the overflow plug until it trickles and close it up with a new gasket. Since I off-road, run higher loads, and oversized tires, I change earlier (around 40,000 km) to avoid transmission issues.
