In this video I’m breaking down a feature that, in my opinion, is a straight up game changer for people recording in normal rooms. I start the video using a little wireless transmitter on my sweater on purpose—because I want you to hear what a “regular” mic setup sounds like in a real, noisy space. Then I get into the biggest thing almost every amateur setup has in common: poor acoustic treatment. Not everybody has a perfectly treated booth, and that’s exactly why the dynamic vs condenser debate never ends. Then I switch over to the mic I’ve been testing: the LEWITT RAY. The main point is its “Aura” feature, which is basically an auto-adjusting gain function based on how far you are from the mic. When I step back, it keeps my level consistent, and when I get close again it doesn’t jump in volume. But the crazy part is how well it rejects room reflections and ambient noise when you’re about 3–4 inches off the capsule—so clean it reminds me of an SM7B’s rejection, except with way more detail and clarity, like an “SM7B on steroids.” If you’re recording at a desk with bare walls, this is the kind of innovation that can actually get you pro-sounding results without needing a multi-thousand-dollar room.
