In this video I’m basically revisiting a mic that’s been a huge part of my recording journey: the Neumann TLM 103. If you remember my Avalon 737 video from a week or two ago, I talked about how that whole setup came together and how the TLM 103 paired with the 737. Today I’m focusing on why I’m seriously considering buying the TLM 103 again, because I’ve been missing that sound—especially the combination of the TLM 103 and Avalon 737. I break down my first experience with the TLM 103 and why it left such a strong impression on me. I’d been listening to samples for years, so when I finally got one about two years ago and pulled it out of that giant briefcase case, I was hyped. The first thing I noticed when I played my voice back was how much more body it captured—at the time it literally sounded better than every mic I’d used up to that point, and it became my go-to for almost every video (with the SM7B taking the spot sometimes). I also keep it real about expensive gear: I usually can’t justify it for what I do. But I listen to y’all, and a lot of you agree the TLM 103 can be a “one and done” mic. So I set a goal: once I hit 8,000 subscribers, I’m buying another TLM 103 to hold myself accountable and keep pushing forward.
