In this wrap-up episode, Rebecca and I finally sit back down after more than a month apart and do some real-talk on what’s been going on around the homestead—and in our heads. We talk about the weird California winter we’ve been getting (fog for weeks, low visibility, cold for us, and now rain) and how that kind of weather just zaps motivation for the “extra” chores: hauling wood, staying ahead of leaves, pruning, and all the little projects that always seem to multiply. We also cover a hard lesson from the chicken yard: our first predator loss in three years. I found a bird wedged behind coop #2 with the head gone and breast meat eaten—could’ve been a Cooper’s hawk, could’ve been the feral cat cleaning up after, but either way it changed how I’m managing the flock. I’ve been keeping birds up most of the day and only letting them out late afternoon so they’ll put themselves away before the auto doors close. We also get into biochar inoculation (how long you can store charged char and what it takes to keep microbes alive), plus basic preparedness that too many people skip—like checking smoke detectors and keeping up on low-hanging-fruit inventory like OTC meds and batteries. Then we zoom out: what disappointed us most this year, what we’re aiming for next, and why gratitude has to happen now—not “someday when we have more.”
