About This Video

In episode 115 of Porterhouse and Teal Live, we’re back after a two-week hiatus and we’re catching you up on the good, the bad, and the “you’ve gotta be kidding me” stuff that always seems to show up when you try to travel. We talk about our Wyoming trip, my attempt to redeem a past failure at the Big Horn 100-mile ultramarathon, and what it took to grind out 100 miles and 20,000 feet of vert in 34 hours and 5 minutes. It was a long haul, but finishing it was one of those satisfying moments where you prove to yourself you can still do hard things. We also get into two real-world preparedness lessons that aren’t theoretical: (1) paying for a service doesn’t mean the job was done right, and (2) “cash” and “debit” don’t always work when the system demands a credit card. Our generator wouldn’t run because the shop overfilled the oil—basic stuff—and we had to push the issue up the chain to get it handled. Then we showed up for a rental car we reserved months ago and got denied because we didn’t have a true credit card. Back on the homestead, it’s full-on harvest season: tomatoes, onions, potatoes, peppers, garlic, carrots, beets—the kitchen is packed and we’re talking storage experiments (sawdust and even wood ash), canning plans, and getting pigs scheduled for processing. This is the time of year where self-reliance gets real, fast.
