Governments are literally trying to force your operating system to become a piece of surveillance, and California already passed it. In this video I break down how California’s law would require OS providers to collect your age at setup, then transmit an age “bucket” (under 13, 13–15, 16–17, 18+) to app developers through a real-time API whenever an app is downloaded or launched. The definition of “operating system provider” is so broad it can hit Windows, iOS, Android, SteamOS, Linux distros, and even custom ROMs—basically anything that looks like a general-purpose OS. I also explain why this gets especially dangerous once developers receive that age signal: the law treats it like “actual knowledge,” shifting liability onto app developers (including open source devs) with serious penalties. And while these bills are sold as “protecting kids,” they don’t even solve the obvious issue of self-declared ages—meaning the next step is predictable: pushing ID verification at the OS layer, then going after workarounds (yes, even VPNs have been proposed for bans in this context). Colorado is moving a very similar bill, and other states are already debating copycat versions.
