This one I didn’t see coming: Mozilla shipped a free “VPN” built directly into Firefox. In this video I turn it on for the first time, run basic IP tests, and walk through what you’re actually getting: 50GB/month of IP-based protection inside the browser, with a data counter, a Mozilla account requirement (annoying, but I get why they need it to prevent abuse), and some surprisingly nice UX like clear indicators and per-site exceptions. I also tested the big question a lot of people had: is Firefox VPN just Mullvad behind the scenes like paid Mozilla VPN is? Nope—this is separate infrastructure, and Firefox doesn’t claim it’s Mullvad. That doesn’t automatically make it bad, but it does raise transparency questions for me, especially since there’s basically no visibility into what server you’re on, no location switching, and it behaves more like a browser proxy than a full system-wide VPN. My takeaway: if you don’t use a VPN at all, turning this on is genuinely an improvement at zero cost. If you already run a system-wide VPN, I don’t see a reason to switch—this is about bumping the baseline, and I’m glad browsers are finally treating IP protection like a default privacy issue, not an advanced-user feature.
