In this first Office Hours Live stream back, I kick things off by explaining the new weekly format: I’ll start with quick updates, then answer questions submitted in advance, and finally hang out with the live chat for open Q&A. The whole point is to make privacy and security guidance less one-directional—because I get a ton of requests for individualized help, and this is a way to give more direct, real-time support without pretending there’s one perfect setup for everyone. I also cover what’s been changing behind the scenes at Techlore: we shut down the forum (moderating it as a tiny team wasn’t sustainable), consolidated into our Ghost site, and I’m working to sunset Patreon to reduce fees and avoid the “Apple wants a cut” nonsense. I talk about new membership perks like my curated private RSS feed for surveillance news, and I mention we can now do memberships via Monero. Then we get into the big question: “Should I switch from iPhone to GrapheneOS?” My take is to think holistically—your operating system matters, but the apps and people around you matter too. If switching breaks your maps workflow or pushes you back to insecure SMS because your circle won’t move off iMessage, that’s a real tradeoff. I generally recommend optimizing what you already have (Signal, password manager, better browser), then trialing a new OS to see if the sacrifices are actually worth it for you.
