I’ve spent over a decade obsessing over privacy details—cell tower triangulation, encryption tradeoffs, metadata, VPN “noise,” Tor workflows, offline backups, all of it. And after doing a lot of soul searching, I realized something uncomfortable: chasing extreme privacy measures “for the sake of maximizing” delivered very little tangible benefit in my day-to-day life. The knowledge was absolutely valuable (and it fuels what I do here), but the bigger takeaway was that privacy doesn’t have to be the destination. Privacy is often a means to an end. It can keep journalists safer under repressive regimes, help people access banned information, and push back on things like ID/age verification gates. Even governments and police rely on privacy when it suits them—which is why it’s so ironic to nitpick messenger differences while policymakers try to ban end-to-end encryption entirely. That’s where the broader “digital rights” ecosystem clicked for me: privacy doesn’t exist in a void. It depends on laws, open ecosystems, interoperability, open source communities, right to repair, and real competition. My core message is intentionality. Figure out your goal—your compass—and let that guide your threat model, your tools, and how “hardcore” you really need to go. Privacy is about freedom, including the freedom to choose what’s “good enough” for you.
