I’ve had these old hoverboards sat around for nearly a decade, collecting dust, and it hit me: the best part of them is the 36V battery inside. So in this build I turned that battery into a portable, battery-powered “network haven” — basically a travel router on steroids — with the full UniFi stack (mainly Network and Protect), proper Wi‑Fi, and both active PoE and 24V passive PoE so I can power cameras, access points, and whatever else I need out in the field. The big challenge was power. I used DC‑to‑DC converters to take the ~36–40V from the battery and boost it up to ~54V for the UniFi gear, then added a separate clean 12V rail for USB charging and active cooling fans (because a Pelican-style case is not great for heat). From there it was all about making it usable: external switches for master/12V/54V control, a voltage display so I can check battery health from the outside, Ethernet pass-through couplers for quick WAN/LAN hookups, and external antennas for solid coverage. At the end I’m powering multiple Protect cameras and even another AP entirely from the box, with no external power. The whole point is simple: I can take a full UniFi system anywhere, and if I want internet on the move I can feed it from Starlink or a 4G dongle.
