The core idea is that after the Cold War, the US-led “unipolar moment” (what Fukuyama framed as the “end of history”) created a global system built on Pax Americana, the supremacy of science as a kind of new religion, and the universality of the US dollar. Jiang’s argument is that all three pillars have been decaying—America ignores its own rules-based order, science turns into orthodoxy instead of innovation, and dollar printing fuels corruption and inequality. Then we go practical: the world we live in is basically subsidized by cheap petroleum—energy underpins everything from computers to food (fertilizer) to global shipping. If that system gets disrupted, you don’t just lose “convenience,” you lose resilience. Jiang maps out where food and water scarcity collide with low freedom/transparency and predicts instability: wars, famines, revolutions, and mass migration. The takeaway I’m sitting with is simple: the game shifts from efficiency to resilience—countries (and people) that adapt survive, and those that keep betting on the old assumptions get wiped out.
