In this Unreal Engine 5.3 tutorial, I show my full workflow to retarget animations from Mixamo to UE5 Manny—and also do the reverse retargeting from Manny back to a Mixamo character (like YBot). Before I even touch Unreal, I quickly fix the biggest Mixamo problem: bone naming and missing root setup. For that, I use Blender with the Mixamo Converter addon, and I batch-convert the character + animations with “Use Unreal Engine bone names” enabled. Also, when you download from Mixamo, I always set Keyframe Reduction to “None” so the animation data stays clean. Inside UE5.3, I create IK Rigs for both the Mixamo character and Manny, set the Retarget Root, and add retarget chains (and yes—Unreal doesn’t auto-name Pelvis properly, so I manually name it “Pelvis”). Then I build two IK Retargeters: Mixamo→Manny and Manny→Mixamo. I edit the retarget pose (usually arms and thighs), adjust Target Mesh Offset, and fix common “moving in place” issues by switching Translation Mode to Absolute—typically on Root, and sometimes Spine or Pelvis depending on the direction. Finally, I export retargeted animations and also show how to duplicate + retarget ABP_Manny so you can use a Mixamo character as a playable character with Manny’s locomotion quickly.
