I’ve reviewed Aura and Bark before, but after retesting both and digging into real-world family experiences, my view changed a lot. In this video I break down how each app actually works day-to-day: Aura is built around prevention (blocking harmful content before your kid sees it) with simple defaults that you can turn on in minutes, while Bark is built around detection (monitoring texts, emails, DMs, and social platforms and alerting you when its AI finds something concerning). What stood out in my testing is that Aura “just works” for most families. You can filter up to 28 categories (social media, explicit content, dating, even gaming platforms), lock in Safe Search and YouTube Restricted Mode, and get a clean dashboard showing browsing history, app usage, and attempts to access blocked content. Aura also scans chats across 200+ popular PC games, which is where it can catch bullying, scams, and predatory behavior—without scraping through private DMs on social apps. Bark can be powerful if you have a specific issue like self-harm risk, bullying, or harassment and you’re willing to fine-tune settings. But setup—especially on iPhone—was hard enough that even a former computer manufacturing professional tester couldn’t get it working, and many families end up flooded with alerts and friction with their kids. Bottom line: Aura is my default recommendation for virtually all families, especially if you want protection without turning into a full-time security expert.
