Good day divers—this week’s tip is all about getting great underwater macro with a smartphone without coming back from a dive with nothing usable. My biggest rule is simple: always start wide. It’s much easier to nail a macro-ish shot on your 1x main lens (or even 2x) than it is to jump straight into the tight, twitchy telephoto stuff where every little movement ruins focus and framing. What I do (and what I recommend you do) is build your way in. Start with a wider, “least macro” shot first, then work closer and closer as you get comfortable. Even when I’m chasing that detailed 5x telephoto look, I’ll often grab a 1x shot first—because if I mess up the super-tight telephoto, at least I’ve still got something in the bag.
